October 2021 Photo Contest Winners

Our October 2021 photo contest is officially closed and our winners have been selected! Last month’s contest was another one for the books with our second straight month of record-breaking entries and votes! We can’t thank you all enough for your support.

The October 2021 photo contest was also special because we changed the way we select our winners when there’s a tie. Rather than selecting a random “Judges Panel” to cast the tiebreaking votes (which usually just meant I asked Nick which photo he liked better), this time we had the community help us break a 3-way tie for first place during our monthly Instagram Livestream.

The change hasn’t made it into the official Contest Rules yet, but we think it was a really cool idea to turn to the community for a live final vote. Let us know what you think about making this an official contest procedure!

Now, let’s find out more about our October 2021 photo contest winners!

3rd Place: @wzhuw

In third place, we have a beautiful shot of some “Zlushie” grown by LA Traffic. The photo was taken and submitted by new Potography member @wzhuw (aka Wilson) and features a dried and manicured bud placed against a clean black background.

Below the bud, a faded reflection can be seen which is usually added in the editing stage to provide context for viewers and to give a subtle and subliminal impression of quality. This shot is definitely fit for a dispensary menu.

As I already mentioned, our October photo contest had a 3-way tie for first place and we brought in the community to help us choose the winners live and direct. So, even though this is our third-place winner, this photo technically received just as many votes as the other two winners and it’s not difficult to see why.

Well done and congrats to @wzhuw!

2nd Place: @wzhuw

In second place, we have another excellent shot by @wzhuw aka Wilson, this time featuring the well-known White Runtz strain.

The second-place winner is a more detailed and magnified shot compared to the third-place winner, and this is likely part of the reason why the Potography team and a large portion of voters fell in love with this one.

The photo featured a single bud against a black background, like the third-place winner, but the higher level of magnification allows viewers the chance to spend countless minutes if not hours examining the incredible detail captured by the photographer.

The bud itself is covered in trichomes and the plant material shows several shades of green and purple along with some prominent orange pistils. Together, the different elements of the bud and the photograph itself make this one an absolute joy to look at, and we loved having the chance to print it on our favorite hemp photo paper too!

1st Place: @bowtie-barista

Finally, in first place, we have another first-time contestant with a photo that was a clear crowd favorite among those who joined us for the live announcement (be sure to follow us on IG and turn on post notifications so you know when to tune in!).

The Bowtie BUDrista (@bowtie-barista) is a cultivator and new Potography member who won the favor of our Livestream audience (and emergency Judges Panel) with the winning shot “Corpse Bride (sour ghost X Wedding Cake).”

Contrasting the other two top contenders, the Bowtie BUDrista’s shot appears to have been taken outside and not against a black background. It’s somewhere between a macro shot and the sort of dispensary menu shot we saw in the 2nd and 3rd place winners, respectively, and it features a beautiful display of swelling buds and fading fan leaves.

This photo captures one of our favorite “Cannabis aesthetics,” if there is such a thing (and, if not, now there is! haha). We simply can’t get enough of those beautiful purple fades and, if we’re not mistaken, the featured bud was actually grown by the photographer!

Not every cannabis photographer has a passion for growing, but it’s hard to be a cannabis grower without sharing some level of love and appreciation for cannabis photography.

Thanks for sharing, @bowtie-barista, congrats on your win, and welcome to Potography!
